Council Watch - City of Stonnington
When tourists visit Melbourne, the world-class fashion hubs of Chapel Street and Toorak Road, the stylish restaurants and cafes of South Yarra and specialist retail destination High Street in Malvern, renowned for its array of exclusive antique shops, are all on the "must see" list of places to visit.
The City of Stonnington is a vibrant and exciting part of Melbourne's inner east. Traditionally it houses an economically and culturally diverse population of 90,000 people with accommodation ranging from the City's finest mansions to large blocks of public housing.
This is a dynamic, highly active community where life is buzzing in retail precincts that encompass everything from the State's premier shopping centre, Chadstone to the famous Prahran Market. Outdoors, an abundance of historic parks and gardens and recreation facilities hum with constant activity.
“Stonnington has a strong tourism, arts and recreation focus so the Council is aware of the need for constant upgrades,†said City of Stonnington Chief Executive Officer, Hadley Sides. “The construction of the new $3 million Grattan Gardens Community Centre is evidence of the emphasis Stonnington places on urban renewal and in providing local residents with high quality facilities.â€
The City of Stonnington is also undertaking extensive landscaping works in Grattan Gardens which will include extensive new plantings, the installation of public art and improved lighting in the park to provide a safe environment for young families. A tender was recently awarded for these stage 1 works.
Another redevelopment underway is the Orrong Romanis Recreation Centre with $1.1 million committed to the project. Council will spend a further $1.4 million on works at the site including extensive landscaping, redevelopment of the existing playground, new walking and bicycle paths and improvement to the two existing sportsgrounds.
These are just some of the many projects Stonnington Council puts out to public tender.
With a substantial capital works budget of $30 million for the financial year 2000- 2001, the City of Stonnington will continue to build on the City's assets to ensure growth and improvements for residents and businesses.
Stonnington also plans a $5.6 million facelift for the area's fashion capital, Chapel Street and the $2.5 million beautification works along Toorak Road.
Speaking at the recent opening of yet another progressive Stonnington Council initiative, the $6 million Phoenix Park, Councilor Hill said the project was testament to what dedication, vision and a working partnership between Council, the community and local business can achieve.
A positive growth area exists with forward planning councils who actively cultivate joint planning with private enterprise.
The Stonnington Council tender activities are indicative of Council tendering Australia wide.
