City of Perth
The City of Perth recognises that the city's future economic development and "quality of life" are interdependent. In an increasingly global economy, the quality of the urban environment affects the ability to attract investment and generate wealth for both Perth and the whole of Western Australia. The City of Perth adopted its first economic development strategy in 2001. As a result, actions are being targeted at the tourism, entertainment and retail sectors.
CITY OF THE FUTURE
The Council vision is "that as the Capital of Western Australia, the City of Perth be widely acclaimed as a city of regional and international significance".
A Strategic Plan developed initiatives for safety and security, inner city housing, major construction projects, a youth policy and economic development which will assist it in fulfilling the Council vision into the 21st century.
PUBLIC PLACES ENHANCEMENT
The City of Perth has begun a major facelift of its main shopping malls and is also working on ways to make its beautiful river more easily accessible to the public.
Lord Mayor Dr Peter Nattrass said the City is undertaking a $14 million, five-year plan to upgrade the Hay and Murray Street Malls as well as Forrest Place in the centre of the city and the nearby Railway Station forecourt. "The City's Malls Action Plan is designed to meet the changing needs of the commercial heart of Western Australia and the high quality of the various design features is in keeping with Perth's status as our premier retail precinct" Dr Nattrass said. Tenders have already been called for the replacement of the Mall's 20-year-old paving.
Perth is a city for people and the City is committed to making one of its greatest assets, the Swan River, a focal point for city visitors. Acting Chief Executive Officer Garry Dunne said the construction of a new southern suburbs railway line to the city opened up opportunities to remove some of the artificial barriers that had effectively cut off part of the foreshore. "This presents an ideal opportunity for us to work with the State Government on realigning road systems and removing obtrusive road infrastructure to open up more of the foreshore" said Mr Dunne.
Another project due to get under way this financial year is construction of a new $500,000 performing arts facility on The Esplanade Reserve. Mr Dunne said tenders would be called soon to construct the facility, which would enable more open-air concerts and other events to be held close to the river.
RECENT TENDERS - THE SKY'S THE LIMIT
The City of Perth has recently approved the tender for the popular Lotto Skyworks radio broadcast and associated promotion. MIX 94.5 will broadcast the January 26 event again after its parent company Perth FM Radio Pty Ltd was chosen as the successful tenderer.
Next year marks the 20th anniversary of the nation's biggest Australia Day fireworks and sound event and organisers are working on making it the biggest and best one yet.
In assessing the radio tender, it was noted that Perth FM Radio Pty Ltd was able to contribute to the technical and mechanical aspects of the event as well as the creative and promotional aspects. Its promotional and broadcast input is valued at $1.635 million for 2004.
The City of Perth has previously announced its other major media partner, with Channel Seven and GWN being awarded the tender for television broadcast and promotion rights.
Once again, Explosive Entertainment will provide the pyrotechnics and special effects for the event, having already won the tender.

A BEAUTIFUL CITY
Australian Aborigines have inhabited the Swan River region for thousands of years. It was not until 1829 that Captain Charles Howe Fremantle took possession of the area on behalf of the British Crown, when he landed at the mouth of the Swan River. Later that year, Sea Captain James Stirling, officially founded Perth and established the Swan River Colony. Named after the Scottish city of the same name, Perth was proclaimed a City by Queen Victoria in 1856. In the mid 1890's the discovery of gold in Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie transformed the City as its population soared. The valuable commodities of iron ore and nickel created another boom for Perth in the 1960's. The City of Perth is regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The unique environment and setting, located on the broad expanse of the Swan River flanked by the bushland of Kings Park, sets it apart from many other cities.
